In the naming ceremony (namkaran) the first letter of the name traditionally comes from the Moon’s nakshatra pada at birth. Enter the baby’s birth details to find it.
How it works
Each of the 27 nakshatras has four padas, and each pada has a syllable (the Avakahada chakra): Ashwini gives Chu, Che, Cho, La; Rohini gives O, Va, Vi, Vu, and so on. The Moon’s pada at birth picks one of them. Many families also accept the other three letters of the same nakshatra. Questions
Is the name letter from the nakshatra or the rashi?
From the nakshatra pada, which also fixes the rashi. The four letters of the nakshatra are the classical choice; some families use any letter of the rashi.
What if the birth time is not exact?
The Moon stays in one pada for about six hours, so a rough time is usually enough. Near a boundary the result says so.
